Batman and Robin bat keyrings (free pattern)

Holy Crochet, Batman! A couple of weeks ago I saw ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ and was hit by a moment of pattern inspiration – I’d make a Batman bat!

During the making, I was also hit by further inspiration – how cute would a Robin bat sidekick be?!

These critters are probably two inches tall, making them perfect keyring size – the pattern to make both is after the jump. Both are made as part of Yarndango over at Aunty’s Tea Room.

So I’m going to start off telling you step by step him to make the Batman keyring, with photographs of the process. Then at the end I’ll tell you how to edit it into Robin (unfortunately without photos because that would a HUGE post). They both follow the same process and are super simple patterns!

The Essentials:

Hook: 3.5mm

Wool: Batman: Black, grey, yellow, peach. Robin: Red, green, yellow, peach, black.

Also needed: Batman: black felt. Robin: Yellow and black felt.

Finished Size: 2” tall, 2-3” wide.

CH = Chain

SC = Single Crochet

INC = Increase

DEC = Decrease

NB: I start my amigurumi using CH2 for simplicity, but if you prefer you can use a magic ring.

Batman Pattern

The head and body are crocheted in one piece, in the round with continuous spirals.

Yes, behind is how I write my patterns as I work

CH2 in black

Round 1: 6sc into centre of 2nd stitch from hook [6]
Round 2: INC around [12]
Round 3: [1sc, INC] Repeat around [18]

Switch to yellow

Round 4: [2sc, INC] Repeat around [24]

Switch to grey

Round 5 – 7: Sc around [24]
Round 8: [2sc, DEC] Repeat around [18]
Round 9: [1sc, DEC] Repeat around [12]
Round 10: DEC around [6]

Stuff firmly

Don’t worry about the stripe jog you’ll get as shown in the picture – we’ll be covering that with wings, so it’s actually a good indicator of the back of your Batman!

Switch to peach

Round 11: INC around [12]

You’ll start seeing this effect happen.

Round 12: [1sc, INC] Repeat around [18]
Round 13: [2sc, INC] Repeat around [24]
Round 14 – 16: Sc around [24]
Round 17: [2sc, DEC] Repeat around [18]
Round 18: [1sc, DEC] Repeat around [12]
Round 19: DEC around [6]

Finish off, stuff firmly and sew the hole closed.

NB: The above is also your basic body for Robin, with the colour changes as listed at the end of this post.

Batman Cowl

Crocheted in continuous spirals in black yarn.

Round 1: 6sc into 2nd stitch from hook [6]
Round 2: INC around [12]
Round 3: [1sc, INC] Repeat around [18]
Round 4: [2sc, INC] Repeat around [24]
Round 5 – 7: Sc around [24]
Round 8: SL ST around [24]

Finish off leaving a VERY long tail for sewing. You’ll be left with a sort of dome.

Black isn’t great to photograph, but I promise it’s a dome!

Pull the cowl onto Batman’s head (this will take a bit of squeezing and squashing until it looks right).

Sew around the brim using the yarn tail to secure, then take the tail up through the head to sew on the nose and mouth (you can see it’s designed to look like a bat, NOT a human). Remember to make sure the jog line is at the back!

With any remaining yarn, take it to the top of the head to create the keyring loop.

Cowl Ears

CH 3 in black.
Row 1: 2sc starting 2nd chain from hook.
Finish leaving long tail for sewing.

Sew in place on top of the cowl.

Using peach (or white) yarn, sew a couple of eyes.

To finish off your Batman, grab the felt and cut a small bat motif and a large pair of wings as below:

Cutting the wings is easiest if you make a template first. You only need to do half since they symmetrical – fold your felt in half, cut round your half template and you’ll get two matching sides. You can do the same with the motif too.

Sew or use a glue gun to attach them in place – the motif on his chest, and the wings on his back over the jog line.

Now you have your finished Batman…

… make his Robin sidekick.

The body is crocheted as below, with the following colour changes:

Round 1 – 3: Green
Round 4: Yellow
Round 5 – 10: Red
Round 11 – 15: peach
Round 16 – 19: Black

To make the mask:

CH7 in green
Row 1: 6Sc starting in 2nd chain from hook. CH1 to turn.
Row 2: 6Sc
Finish leaving long tail for sewing. Once sewn on, sew two eyes in peach (or white) yarn.

His wings are yellow felt, and on his chest is a small yellow felt R in a black felt circle.

I’m hoping to sell a few of these at a local craft gallery, so fingers crossed – I’ll let you know next week. Also next I’ll be telling you how to make three villians – The Joker, Bane and (hopefully) Harley Quinn.

As always, if you have a go at Batman and Robin, I’d love to see photos. Email me at amiguruthi[at]hotmail[dot]co[dot]uk.
