Neko the kitty (Free Pattern)

Hi everyone, I’m back with Yarndango something-or-other-number (one day I will work out where I am in the Yarndango challenge!). Unfortunately last week the eternal struggle between essays and crochet claimed another victim, but I’m the brunt of the way through now so hopefully business can return to somewhat normal again!

What do I have for you today then? Well, it’s another kitty – Neko the Kitty to be precise.

Neko is the lead character of the webcomic Neko the Kitty. It’s a very funny comic, especially if you’re a cat owner, but equally so if you are just in on the cats = world domination secret too. Read the archive, the early ones are definitely worth a look as much as the new ones.

Free pattern to make your own Neko after the jump.

An admission – I’m certain I photographed the stages of making Neko, but can I heck as find the photos. I switched cameras half way through (due to a much needed phone upgrade) and I think they may have gotten accidently deleted in the move. So it’s text only this week I’m afraid.

The Essentials:

Hook: 2mm

Wool: white and orange DK

Finished Size: approx 5” long, 3″ tall to the head, 4″ tall to the tail.

Also needed: Black and white felt; black embroidery thread.

Optional: Safety eyes (I think that some big safety eyes would look much better than my felt ones, so if you have any 12mm ones try these)

Terms:

CH = Chain

Sc = Single Crochet

INC = Increase

DEC = Decrease

BLO = Back Loops Only

Head

In white, CH13

Round 1: Sc around the chain [24 – 12 down the chain, turn at the bottom, 12 up the chain again]
Round 2: {3sc, INC} repeat around [30]
Round 3: {4sc, INC} repeat around [36]
Round 4-14: Sc around [36]
Round 15: {4sc, DEC} repeat around [30]
Round 16: {3sc, DEC} repeat around [24]
Round 17: {DEC} repeat around [12]

Finish off and stuff. Whip stitch down the open side to sew it closed. You should have a sort of rounded square.

See his jawline? Make sure when you continue Neko so that the head is the right way up – the rounds should go horizontally not vertically.

Ears (x2)

Magic ring/ Ch2

Round 1: 6sc into 2nd ch from hook/ centre of magic circle [6]
Round 2: Sc around [6]
Round 3: INC around [12]
Round 4: Sc around [12]
Round 5: {1sc, INC} repeat around [18]
Round 6: Sc around [18]
Round 7: {2sc, INC} repeat around [24]
Round 8-11: Sc around [24]

Finish off and stuff, then sew in place on top of the head. they should cover the corners of the square at slight angles, but still stick almost straight up.

Mohawk

Ok so it’s not really a mohawk as such, more of a head ruffle!

Ch 4
Row 1: 3Sc starting in 2nd ch from hook
CH 7
Row 2: 6Sc starting in 2nd ch from hook
CH 5
Row 3: 4Sc starting in 2nd ch from hook

Finish off and sew in place, smaller point to the top.

Body

Round 1: 6sc into 2nd ch from hook/ centre of magic circle [6]
Round 2: INC around [12]
Round 3: {1sc, INC} repeat around [18]
Round 4: {2sc, INC} repeat around [24]
Round 5: {3sc, INC} repeat around [30]
Round 6: {4sc, INC} repeat around [36]
Round 7: {5sc, INC} repeat around [42]
Round 8-14: Sc around [42]
Round 15: {5sc, DEC} repeat around [36]
Round 16: {4sc, DEC} repeat around [30]
Round 17-21: Sc around [30]
Round 22: {3sc, DEC} repeat around [24]
Round 23: {2sc, DEC} repeat around [18]
Round 24: {1sc, DEC} repeat around [12]

Stuff

Round 25: DEC around [6]

Finish off and leave a long tail for sewing. Attach Neko’s head to the thinner end. I suggest lining his chin up just above the closure of the magic ring, and sewing about a third of the way up the back of the head.

See what I mean? The head is still upright, but not precariously balanced.

Chest Ruffle

Ch 4
Row 1: 3Sc starting in 2nd ch from hook
CH 5
Row 2: 4Sc starting in 2nd ch from hook

Finish off and sew in place under the closure of the magic ring, larger point to the top.

Tail

I’m going to suggest an edit to the tail pattern, as I don’t think I extended the orange far enough down. You can either stop where I did or stop where I suggest would look better.

Ch2/ magic circle

Round 1: 6sc into 2nd ch from hook/ centre of magic circle [6]
Round 2: INC around [12]
Round 3: {1sc, INC} repeat around [18]
Round 4: {2sc, INC} repeat around [24]
Round 5: INC six times, 24Sc [30]
Round 6: INC six times, 30 Sc [36] This gives the tail a twist
Round 7: {5sc, INC} repeat around [42]
Round 8: {6sc, INC} repeat around [48]

Colour change to orange for row 9

Round 9: {7sc, INC} repeat around [54]
Round 10: {8sc, INC} repeat around [60]
Round 11-15: Sc around [60]

I changed colour back to white at the beginning of row 15

Round 16: {8sc, DEC} around [54]
Round 17: {7sc, DEC} around [48]

I suggest you colour change back to white here instead for row 18

Round 18: 18Sc, DEC six times, 18Sc [42]
Round 19: 15Sc, DEC six times, 15Sc [36] gives the tail it’s second twist
Round 20: {4sc, DEC} repeat around [30]
Round 21: {3sc, DEC} repeat around [24]
Round 22: {2sc, DEC} repeat around [18]
Round 23-26: Sc around [18]

Finish off and stuff. Sew in place as shown above, a bulge should stick out over Neko’s back.

Back Legs (x2)

Ch2/ magic circle

Round 1: 6sc into 2nd ch from hook/ centre of magic circle [6]
Round 2: INC around [12]
Round 3: Sc around BLO [12] turns the bottom of the foot
Round 4: Sc around both loops again [12]
Round 5-7: Sc around [12]
Round 8: 3sc, INC six times, 3Sc [18]
Round 9-12: Sc around [18]
Round 13: 6sc, INC six times, 6Sc [24]

Finish off and stuff. Your leg should have a slight dog leg appearance to it (funny how it’s still called that for a cat!)

Hey look - I did photograph something!

Sew in place at the back of the body.

Front legs (x2)

Round 1: 6sc into 2nd ch from hook/ centre of magic circle [6]
Round 2: INC around [12]
Round 3: Sc around BLO [12] turns the bottom of the foot
Round 4: Sc around both loops again [12]
Round 5-13: Sc around [12]

Finish off and stuff. Sew in place at the front of the body.

Your Neko is nearly complete. He just needs his face.

Create the eyes by cutting two circles from black felt. Neko’s eyes have a smaller white circle which forms the main pupil, and then a small highlight of white below. I used a glue gun to stick the white to the black, or you could sew it.

Embroider Neko’s face using the black embroidery thread. He needs a triangle for a nose, and a bow shaped mouth connected under it. He had two little fangs at either end of the mouth, and then a pair of raised eyebrows to finish.

And there’s Neko! Go read the webcomic archives and tell them I sent you. Then come back, make your own and email me a copy to amiguruthi[at]hotmail[dot]co[dot]uk (also the address to send photos of any ami’s you’ve made from my other patterns).
